Officers Killed

10 year Carbondale Police Officer Lenard "Lon" Sizemore was killed the night of August 20, 1933 at the age of 54. At around 2:20 a.m. Sizemore attempted to arrest Joseph Brinson at "a bootlegging joint" for disturbing the peace, when Brinson resisted arrest.  Brinson produced a handgun and shot Sizemore to death.  In less than an hour’s time a manhunt ensued, bringing the Jackson County Sheriff and his deputies to Carbondale to help locate Brinson.  Once Brinson was located, a gunfight between Brinson and the Sheriff's deputies occurred in a corn field (now the 200 block of E Oak), resulting in Brinson’s death.

In 2002 Sizemore’s name was added to the Illinois Police Officer Memorial in Springfield, IL, as well as the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
