Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Freight Train

On 04-29-18 at approximately 4:28 a.m., officers with the City of Carbondale Police Department and the SIU Department of Public Safety responded to the area of the East Pleasant Hill Road overpass in reference to a subject that was struck by a north bound freight train.  The victim was walking in the area of the train tracks when he was struck by the train and died bas a result of injuries sustained. The victim has been identified as 20 year old Aaron Banez, a Southern Illinois University student from Chicago, Illinois. The Carbondale Police Department was assisted by the SIU Department of Public Safety and the Canadian National Railroad in the investigation, which is ongoing.

Previous Release:

On 04-29-18 at approximately 4:28 a.m., officers with the City of Carbondale Police Department and the SIU Police Department responded to the area of the East Pleasant Hill Road overpass in reference to a subject that was struck by a north bound freight train.  The victim was walking in the area of the train trucks when struck by the train.  This area is not a railroad crossing.  The victim is not being identified at this time pending notification to the next of kin.  The Carbondale Police Department and the SIU Police Department are working together on the currently active investigation with assistance from Canadian National Railroad.
