Death of Department K9 Viper

It is with sadness that the City of Carbondale Police Department announces the death of K-9 Officer Viper.  Viper passed in his sleep during the evening of April 23, 2018.  Officer Mike Vaughn was Viper’s partner from 2005 until his retirement in 2017.  Officer Vaughn kept Viper after retirement and provided him a comfortable retirement space.

Viper was trained as a dual purpose dog and worked as part of numerous police investigations.  During Viper’s 12 years career, he was instrumental in the seizure of an estimated 1 million dollars in US currency and properties.  Viper seized numerous illegal firearms and narcotics.  Viper was deployed to track on numerous occasions resulting in a high number of felony and misdemeanor apprehensions and arrests.  Officer Vaughn and Viper played key roles for 12 years helping officers and community members not only in Carbondale, but numerous regional departments to make our communities safe.

The City of Carbondale and the Police Department appreciate all of Viper’s dedication and success.  We thank both him and Officer Vaughn.  Please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers.
