Suspected Arrested in Armed Robbery Investigation

On 10-13-2017, at 12:32 a.m., officers with the City of Carbondale Police Department responded to the Circle K convenience store, located at 1901 South Illinois Avenue, in reference to a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.  Officers learned two suspects entered the business and demanded money.  Both suspects were believed to be black males and both were wearing Halloween masks.  One suspect was armed with a handgun.  The suspects fled the business on foot with an undisclosed amount of money and merchandise.  There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

During the course of investigation, detectives with the City of Carbondale Police Department developed information which led to the identification of one of the robbery suspects.  Detectives obtained a Jackson County arrest warrant charging Arthur Eckles, Jr., age 43, of Calumet City, Illinois with Armed Robbery.  On 10-14-17, at 3:45 p.m. Eckles was located and arrested in Carbondale by members of the investigative task force.  He was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail.  Bond has been set at $500,000.

The investigation into this incident and the series of armed robberies which have occurred in Carbondale and Herrin since late July are continuing.  All of the incidents are being investigated as related until it can be determined otherwise.  The Carbondale and Herrin Police Departments are primarily being assisted in the investigations by the Illinois State Police, the Jackson & Williamson County Sheriff’s & State’s Attorney Offices, the SIU Police Department and the FBI.

The City of Carbondale and the City of Herrin previously partnered to offer a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and the conviction of those responsible for the recent string of armed robberies in both cities.  The two cities continue to call upon the public to provide any information they may have regarding these crimes.
